Actors Alec Baldwin and Stephen Baldwin are safe and recovering after being involved in a car accident in East Hampton, New York, over the weekend. The brothers’ vehicle reportedly collided with a tree after a garbage truck suddenly cut them off, leaving Hilaria Baldwin’s Range Rover heavily damaged but causing no injuries.
The incident took place on the morning of October 13, just days after the Baldwins attended the Hamptons International Film Festival. TMZ first reported that the brothers were driving through East Hampton when they swerved to avoid a large garbage truck, resulting in the car hitting a tree.
Alec Baldwin, 67, addressed the situation in an Instagram video, providing his own detailed account of what happened. “This morning, I was in a car accident. A guy cut me off in a truck — a big garbage truck the size of a whale,” Baldwin said. “To avoid hitting him, I hit a tree. I hit a big, fat tree. It crushed my wife’s car.”
Visibly shaken but composed, Baldwin admitted he felt terrible about damaging his wife’s vehicle. “I crushed my wife’s car; I feel bad about that,” he said. “But it’s all fine; I’m fine. My brother’s fine.”
The 30 Rock actor went on to thank the East Hampton Town Police Department for their prompt assistance at the scene, giving special thanks to Officer Gerken, whom he described as a “lovely guy.” USA TODAY has reached out to the department for comment.
Stephen Baldwin, 59, who was visiting from out of town for the film festival, also confirmed that he was unharmed. His publicist, James Moore, issued a statement to USA TODAY saying, “Stephen is doing fine and is grateful no one was injured. He appreciates the concern and can confirm that he and Alec are both safe and well.”
The accident comes at a time when Alec Baldwin has been under public scrutiny for several months due to his ongoing involvement in the Rust film shooting case. However, in this instance, both brothers were quick to reassure fans that the crash was simply a matter of bad luck and quick reflexes.
After recounting the accident, Alec shifted his focus to his family, expressing support for his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, who was recently eliminated from Dancing with the Stars. “I’m going to LA to see my family. Can’t wait,” he said. “Hilaria, I’m very proud of you.”
Local authorities have not yet released an official report, but early information suggests that no other vehicles were directly involved and that the garbage truck driver left the scene uninjured. Witnesses in the area told reporters that police responded quickly and that the damaged vehicle was towed away shortly after.
Despite the frightening nature of the crash, both Alec and Stephen Baldwin appear to be in good spirits, grateful that the incident ended without serious harm. As Alec put it in his post, “Cars can be replaced. People can’t.”
