Rob Reiner and Wife Found Dead in Brentwood Home

Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead Sunday afternoon inside their Brentwood home in Los Angeles, authorities confirmed. The couple was discovered with apparent stab wounds, prompting a homicide investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department were dispatched to the residence on Chadbourne Avenue around 3:30 p.m., where they found a man and a woman, approximately 78 and 68 years old, deceased inside the home. A source close to the family later confirmed to NBC News that the victims were Reiner and his wife.

LAPD Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton said investigators are not currently seeking a suspect or person of interest as the investigation remains in its early stages. Authorities are in the process of obtaining a search warrant, citing legal requirements related to the property, before proceeding further.

“This is an ongoing investigation,” Hamilton said, adding that the case would be handled by the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division. The Los Angeles County Coroner is expected to formally release the victims’ identities.

Neighbors told investigators that the couple lived at the home, and property records confirm that the residence belonged to the Reiners. Officers were dispatched shortly after paramedics for what police described as an “ambulance death investigation,” a term used when officers respond to deaths discovered by firefighters.

Rob Reiner, an Oscar-nominated director and actor, was widely celebrated for his contributions to film and television. His work includes iconic titles such as This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, and A Few Good Men. Reiner was also known for his political activism and advocacy for social causes.

He and Michele Singer Reiner married in 1989 and shared three children together: Jake, Nick, and Romy. Reiner also had an adopted daughter, Tracy Reiner, from his previous marriage to filmmaker Penny Marshall. Tracy Reiner said she was left speechless by the news. “I came from the greatest family ever,” she said. “I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.”

Tributes poured in from local and national leaders following the announcement. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described the loss as “tragic,” highlighting Reiner’s role in founding First 5 California and his advocacy for early childhood development and marriage equality. California Governor Gavin Newsom praised Reiner’s storytelling legacy, calling him a “big-hearted genius” whose work taught generations about empathy and justice.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also issued a statement, describing Reiner as “creative, funny, and beloved,” and calling Michele his “indispensable partner” in both life and work.

As investigators continue their work, the entertainment industry and broader community are grappling with the sudden loss of a filmmaker whose work left a lasting mark on American cinema and public life.
