Michael Reagan, the eldest son of former President Ronald Reagan, has passed away at the age of 80, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute confirmed Tuesday. The foundation described him as “a steadfast guardian of his father’s legacy” and praised his life as one “shaped by conviction, purpose, and an abiding devotion to President Reagan’s ideals.” The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Born in 1945 to Irene Flaugher, Michael Reagan was adopted just hours after birth by Ronald Reagan and his then-wife, actress Jane Wyman. Following in his parents’ footsteps, he pursued acting, later building a career as a conservative commentator and talk show host. He was a contributor to Newsmax television and hosted The Michael Reagan Show, a syndicated radio program.
Michael Reagan was also an author, penning several books, including his personal memoirs On the Outside Looking In and Twice Adopted. Beyond media, he devoted time to charitable work, notably raising funds through powerboat racing and serving as chair of the John Douglas French Alzheimer’s Foundation for three years.
He remained dedicated to preserving and promoting his father’s legacy, serving as chair of the Reagan Legacy Foundation. Michael Reagan is survived by his two children with his second wife, Colleen.
His passing marks the loss of a public figure who bridged the personal and political world of one of America’s most influential presidents, carrying forward Ronald Reagan’s ideals throughout his life.
