JD and Usha Vance Expect Their Fourth Child

Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, announced on Tuesday that they are expecting a baby boy, due in late July. The couple shared the news in a joint social media post, saying they are “very excited” and that both Usha and the baby are doing well as they prepare to welcome their fourth child.

The announcement marks a rare moment in U.S. political history. It is the first known time in the modern era that a sitting second lady has been pregnant while her husband is in office, adding a personal milestone to Vance’s first year as vice president.

JD Vance, 41, and Usha Vance, 40, met while attending Yale Law School in 2010 and married four years later in Kentucky. They are already parents to three young children: two sons, Ewan and Vivek, and a daughter, Mirabel. In their statement, the Vances expressed gratitude to their staff and to military doctors who have been involved in their care.

Family life has been a visible theme throughout Vance’s political career. Usha Vance spoke at the 2024 Republican National Convention about her husband’s deep desire to build a close-knit family, describing it as his “one overriding ambition.” Allies and colleagues often point to her as an example of the pro-family values that Vance frequently emphasizes in public speeches.

The vice president has openly advocated for higher birth rates in the United States, framing family growth as both a cultural and national priority. That message has resonated with supporters, particularly as the country faces long-term declines in fertility. Following the announcement, an official White House social media account congratulated the couple, calling the administration “the most pro-family” in U.S. history.

The Vances have often included their children in public life, taking them on official trips abroad, including visits to the Vatican and diplomatic engagements in India. Despite this visibility, Usha Vance has largely kept details of her family life private.

The news also follows another recent baby announcement within the administration, as White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed last month that she is expecting a daughter in May, underscoring a period of personal milestones for several senior White House figures.
