Mets Land Freddy Peralta in Blockbuster Trade with Brewers

The New York Mets have finally secured the front-line starter they’ve been pursuing all winter, acquiring All-Star pitcher Freddy Peralta along with right-hander Tobias Myers from the Milwaukee Brewers. In exchange, the Brewers received two of the Mets’ top prospects, Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams.

Peralta, a two-time All-Star coming off a career season (17-6, 2.70 ERA in 176⅔ innings), was highly coveted across the league. Over the past three seasons, he has consistently recorded at least 200 strikeouts per year, ranking third in opponent batting average (.210) and 10th in ERA among qualifiers. At $8 million for 2026, he provides exceptional value for the Mets before he reaches free agency.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns, who originally oversaw Peralta’s development in Milwaukee, emphasized the importance of the acquisition:
“Acquiring Freddy adds another established starter to help lead our rotation. We sought to complement our rotation with another front-end pitcher, and we’re thrilled we are able to bring Freddy to the Mets.”

The deal comes as part of a major offseason overhaul for New York, following a disappointing 2025 campaign despite having baseball’s second-highest payroll. The Mets had already seen the departure of long-tenured players Brandon Nimmo, Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz, and Jeff McNeil, while adding key pieces like Bo Bichette and Luis Robert Jr.

Peralta, 29, is now the anchor of the Mets’ rotation, joined by Nolan McLean, David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Sean Manaea, and Kodai Senga, with Myers and Jonah Tong providing depth. Myers, 27, has shown promise as both a starter and reliever, posting a 3.48 ERA across his last two seasons as a starter and a 1.62 ERA in relief appearances.

On the other side, the Brewers opted to trade Peralta rather than risk losing him for a compensatory draft pick, following a similar strategy used with Devin Williams last winter. Sproat and Williams, two of the Mets’ top prospects, are highly rated and expected to make an impact in Milwaukee’s system.

With Peralta leading the way, the Mets hope to stabilize their rotation and avoid the struggles that derailed their 2025 season, positioning themselves as serious contenders in the National League for 2026.
