Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George has been suspended for 25 games without pay for violating the NBA’s anti-drug policy, the league announced Saturday. The suspension began with the team’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans and will last until George’s expected return on March 25 against the Chicago Bulls.
In a statement, George acknowledged his mistake, explaining that he had taken an “improper medication” while seeking treatment for a personal mental health issue. “I take full responsibility for my actions and apologize to the Sixers organization, my teammates, and the Philly fans for my poor decision-making during this process,” George said. He added that he intends to use the suspension to focus on his health and return in top form.
The suspension will cost George approximately $11.7 million of his $51.7 million salary, or roughly $469,692 per game. Financially, the 76ers will save more than $5 million in luxury tax payments during his absence.
George, 35, has been averaging 16 points per game while shooting 38.2% from three-point range this season. He has been a key contributor alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, with the trio outscoring opponents by over seven points per 100 possessions in 17 games.
Sixers coach Nick Nurse praised George’s leadership and character, saying, “He’s been fine. Really fun to coach. Really good teammate. His teammates really like him. Showing some great leadership.” Embiid also highlighted George’s irreplaceable role on the team, calling him “probably our best perimeter defender” and noting his versatility on both ends of the court.
Philadelphia currently sits sixth in the Eastern Conference with a 26-21 record. The team has a 16-11 record in games with George and 10-10 when he is absent. While his absence leaves a gap in the rotation, the organization is committed to supporting him through this period.
George’s suspension marks a significant setback for the Sixers as they aim for a playoff push, but he has vowed to return focused and ready to contribute to the team’s postseason efforts.
