Presidents Day 2026 falls on Monday, Feb. 16. Officially known as Washington’s Birthday, the federal holiday honors the nation’s first president, George Washington, though it’s widely recognized today as a celebration of U.S. presidents more broadly.
As one of the 12 federal holidays, Presidents Day brings a mix of closures and regular business hours. Here’s what to expect.
Retail and Grocery Stores
Most major retailers and grocery chains will remain open.
Target will operate during its regular business hours. Grocery stores such as Aldi, Food Lion, Trader Joe’s and Wegmans are also expected to welcome customers as usual.
Restaurants and Fast Food
Fast-food chains and restaurants will largely stay open. That includes Burger King, Chick-fil-A, IHOP, Taco Bell and Subway.
However, hours can vary by location, so customers are encouraged to check with their local restaurant before heading out.
Pharmacies
CVS Pharmacy locations will be open on Presidents Day, making it convenient for customers who need prescriptions or other essentials.
Banks and Financial Markets
Most banks will be closed in observance of the federal holiday, as Presidents Day is recognized by the Federal Reserve. Online banking and ATM services will still be available for routine transactions.
The U.S. stock market will also be closed. The New York Stock Exchange observes Washington’s Birthday as a federal holiday, with trading set to resume on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
Mail and Delivery Services
The U.S. Postal Service will suspend regular mail delivery and close retail locations for the day. Some services will still be accessible online through USPS.com and at self-service kiosks.
UPS and FedEx will continue making deliveries, although FedEx has noted that some areas may experience limited pickup services or early drop-box closures.
In short, while government offices, banks and the stock market will pause operations, most stores, restaurants and delivery services will continue running on Presidents Day 2026.
