
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed the death of Jacksonville rapper Lil Poppa, whose real name was Janarious Wheeler. He was 25 years old.
Officials said Wednesday that the cause of death remains under investigation. No additional details have been released.
Lil Poppa was a rising voice in Southern hip-hop and had built a strong following through his melodic style and emotionally driven lyrics. He was signed to Collective Music Group, the label founded by rapper Yo Gotti, a move that helped elevate his national profile in recent years.
He gained widespread recognition with his 2021 debut studio album, “Blessed, I Guess,” a project that showcased his storytelling ability and personal reflections on life, struggle and growth. The album marked a major step in his career and solidified his place among Jacksonville’s emerging rap talents.
Just days before news of his death, Lil Poppa released a new single titled “Out of Town Bae,” signaling continued momentum in his music career. He was also scheduled to perform next month in New Orleans, further highlighting his active touring schedule.
