Trump Congratulates Team USA After Overtime Gold Medal Win

President Donald Trump celebrated Team USA’s dramatic overtime victory over Canada in the men’s hockey gold medal game at the 2026 Winter Olympics, calling it a major win for the country.

“Congratulations to our great U.S.A. Ice Hockey team. THEY WON THE GOLD. WOW!” Trump wrote on Truth Social shortly after the Americans secured their first Olympic men’s hockey gold since 1980. “WHAT A GAME!!! LOTS OF WINNING!!!”

Team USA defeated Canada 2-1 in Milan, sealing the victory in three-on-three overtime when Jack Hughes beat Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington with the game-winning shot. The triumph marked the program’s first gold medal since the famed “Miracle on Ice” team stunned the world at the 1980 Olympics.

The Americans struck first when Matt Boldy split two defenders and found the net in the opening period. Canada answered in the second with a goal from Cale Makar, setting up a tense finish.

Neither team scored in the third period, thanks in large part to U.S. goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who turned away 40 shots and preserved the tie with several key saves late in regulation.

The rivalry between the United States and Canada had intensified in recent years, fueled in part by political tensions and previous international matchups. While the Americans fell short in last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off, they delivered on the sport’s biggest stage in Milan.

As players celebrated on the ice with gold medals around their necks, Trump’s message echoed the excitement back home — a championship moment decades in the making.
