Arizona Reaches First Final Four Since 2001

The Arizona Wildcats are heading back to the Final Four for the first time in over two decades after a commanding 79-64 win over the Purdue Boilermakers.

The victory not only secured a historic milestone for Arizona but also set a new program record with 36 wins in a single season—surpassing a mark that had stood since 1988. Under head coach Tommy Lloyd, the Wildcats have now established themselves as one of the most dominant teams in the country.

Following the win, Lloyd paid tribute to legendary former coach Lute Olson, whose legacy still looms large over the program. The emotional moment resonated with fans, many of whom see this year’s team as a continuation of the foundation Olson built.

Arizona’s success was driven by its young core, with three freshman starters stepping up on the biggest stage. Brayden Burries, Ivan Kharchenkov, and Koa Peat combined for over 50 points, showing composure and confidence against a seasoned Purdue squad. Senior guard Jaden Bradley also contributed with key scoring to maintain momentum.

The Wildcats took control early in the game, building a first-half lead before Purdue attempted to fight back. However, Arizona responded strongly after halftime, pulling away with a dominant second-half performance that left little doubt about the outcome.

For Purdue, the loss marks a disappointing end to a strong season. Star guard Braden Smith, who recently became the NCAA’s all-time assists leader, finished his college career with another solid performance, though it wasn’t enough to extend the Boilermakers’ tournament run.

Arizona now carries a 13-game winning streak into the Final Four, where they will face the winner of the matchup between Michigan and Tennessee. With momentum, depth, and rising stars, the Wildcats are now in position to chase what could become the greatest season in program history.

After years of falling short, Arizona has finally broken through—and this time, they look ready for more.
