Pope Leo XIV Calls for Peace, Rejects Use of Religion to Justify War

During a powerful Palm Sunday Mass at St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV delivered a clear message: war cannot be justified in the name of God.

Speaking before tens of thousands gathered to mark Palm Sunday, the pope emphasized that God stands for peace, not violence. “He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war,” Leo said, firmly rejecting the idea that religion can be used to legitimize conflict.

His remarks come at a time of escalating global tensions, including ongoing conflicts involving Iran, Ukraine, and broader geopolitical divisions. In some cases, leaders have invoked religious beliefs to justify military actions—an approach the pope directly challenged in his homily.

Leo described God as the “king of peace,” urging believers to reflect on compassion, reconciliation, and the suffering of others. He called on the faithful to reject narratives that link faith with violence and instead focus on healing and unity.

The pope also offered special prayers for Christians in the Middle East, many of whom are unable to fully observe Holy Week due to ongoing conflict. He highlighted their struggles as a reminder of the human cost of war, encouraging the global community to remain mindful of those enduring hardship.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, commemorating the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem before his crucifixion and resurrection. Leo used the occasion to connect the suffering of Christ with the pain experienced by people in conflict zones today, calling it a moral responsibility for the world not to ignore their plight.

Looking ahead, the pope is expected to lead several key Holy Week events, including Good Friday services and Easter celebrations, continuing his emphasis on peace, humility, and spiritual reflection.

In a time marked by division and conflict, Pope Leo XIV’s message was clear: faith should be a force for peace—not a justification for war.
