A night meant for celebration at Lincoln University turned tragic on Saturday when gunfire erupted outside the campus’s International Cultural Center, leaving one person dead and six others injured, according to authorities.

Chester County District Attorney Chris de Barrena-Sarobe confirmed during a Sunday morning press conference that the shooting occurred amid the university’s homecoming festivities following a football game.

“This is a devastating night,” Barrena-Sarobe said. “It was a chaotic scene and people fled in every direction.”

One individual was taken into custody and found to be in possession of a firearm. Investigators have not ruled out the possibility of another shooter, but officials emphasized that they do not believe the incident was a planned mass shooting.

The victim’s name has not yet been released, pending family notification.

Witnesses described scenes of panic and disbelief as the celebration turned to chaos. “It’s just so sad. It’s traumatic, a little bit,” said attendee Ajia Hopkins. “You come out here to have a good time and you never expect for this to happen.”

Authorities from local, state, and federal agencies are collaborating on the investigation, urging anyone with information or video footage to contact the FBI tip line at 1-800-CALLFBI. Barrena-Sarobe stressed the importance of digital evidence, noting that cellphone videos could be key to identifying those responsible.

Lincoln University’s Director of Public Safety, Marc Partee, expressed deep sorrow in a statement Sunday morning. “We set this out to be a time to celebrate the legacy of Lincoln University, the first HBCU in the country,” he said. “Devastated — if there was another word more impactful, I’d use it. But devastated is a start.”

The university announced that counseling services will be available to students and community members affected by the tragedy.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro shared his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), saying he had been briefed on the incident and was offering full support to the university community.

As investigators piece together what happened, the Lincoln University community is left grieving — a celebration of history and pride cut short by senseless violence.
