Steven Spielberg is once again exploring humanity’s relationship with extraterrestrial life, and the newly released trailer for Disclosure Day suggests his latest vision may be one of his most unsettling yet.
The trailer, which debuted Tuesday, centers on a global moment of shock when aliens appear to make contact with Earth in unexpected and deeply personal ways. Emily Blunt stars as a meteorologist whose routine weather broadcast takes a chilling turn when she suddenly begins speaking in what sounds like an alien language—live on air and witnessed by audiences around the world. The scene sets the tone for a story where the truth about extraterrestrial life is no longer distant speculation, but an immediate and disruptive reality.
As the trailer unfolds, Spielberg layers in eerie imagery that hints at a worldwide phenomenon. Crop circles emerge overnight, animals behave with unnatural purpose, and a deer silently leads a child from her bedroom toward a glowing house. Elsewhere, Colin Firth’s character undergoes a mysterious physical transformation as his eyes shift color, while government officials race through the streets in black vehicles, suggesting a frantic attempt to contain or understand events spiraling out of control.
Josh O’Connor appears to play a key role in unraveling the mystery. His character claims to understand what is happening and insists that secrecy is no longer an option. “Full disclosure. To the whole world,” he declares, framing the film’s central question: how humanity reacts when the truth about alien life can no longer be hidden.
Written by David Koepp, Spielberg’s longtime collaborator on Jurassic Park, Disclosure Day also stars Wyatt Russell and Colman Domingo. The film marks Spielberg’s first project since his 2022 semi-autobiographical drama The Fabelmans and represents a return to the genre that helped define his career.
Disclosure Day is Spielberg’s fourth film centered on alien contact, following Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and War of the Worlds. Unlike his earlier portrayals—ranging from wonder to invasion—the new film appears to blend awe, fear, and moral urgency, asking not whether aliens exist, but whether humanity is prepared to face them.
With its haunting imagery and global stakes, Disclosure Day positions itself as a modern reflection on truth, fear, and collective responsibility—hallmarks of Spielberg’s most enduring science fiction.
