Ryan Hurst, known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Abandons, has been cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming live-action adaptation of God of War, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. The series, based on PlayStation’s mythology-inspired video game franchise, has already received a two-season order, with pre-production underway in Vancouver.
The show, created by writer and executive producer Ronald D. Moore (Outlander, For All Mankind), will follow Kratos and his ten-year-old son, Atreus, on a journey to spread the ashes of their deceased wife and mother, Faye. The series explores the evolving father-son dynamic as Kratos attempts to teach Atreus godly wisdom, while Atreus challenges his father to embrace his humanity.
Kratos, a Spartan-born god with a tragic past, is renowned in the franchise for his combat skills, stoic nature, and the epic battles he has fought across ten successful games. The live-action series will focus on this later chapter of Kratos’s life, highlighting his relationship with Atreus as a central narrative element.
Hurst previously joined the God of War universe as Thor in God of War Ragnarök, earning a BAFTA nomination for his performance. His casting as Kratos marks a significant return to the franchise, and fans are eager to see his interpretation of the iconic character.
The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions. Executive producers include Moore, Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys) is set to direct the first two episodes.
Hurst’s extensive career spans fan-favorite series, including The Walking Dead, SWAT, The Mysterious Benedict Society, Bosch, and Bates Motel. He will next appear in Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey, premiering July 17.
With Hurst as Kratos and Moore at the helm, Prime Video’s God of War aims to bring the intense mythology, action, and emotional depth of the games to a new live-action audience.
