The cause of death of beloved actress Catherine O’Hara has been confirmed, shedding light on the sudden loss of one of comedy’s most enduring stars. According to her death certificate released by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, O’Hara died from a pulmonary embolism, with rectal cancer listed as the underlying cause.
O’Hara, who was 71, had not publicly disclosed any health struggles before her death. She was celebrated for a career that spanned more than five decades, from her early days on SCTV to iconic roles as Kevin’s mother in Home Alone and the unforgettable Moira Rose on Schitt’s Creek. Her performance as Moira earned her a Primetime Emmy Award in 2020 and a Golden Globe in 2021, cementing her legacy as a comedic powerhouse.
Dan Levy, her Schitt’s Creek co-star, creator, and collaborator, shared a heartfelt tribute, calling it a “gift” to have worked alongside her and describing her as extended family. The cast and crew of The Studio also honored O’Hara, praising her warmth, class, and humor, and expressing deep sorrow over her loss.
