Katherine Short, a Los Angeles social worker and the daughter of actor and comedian Martin Short, has died at the age of 42, her family confirmed.
“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short,” the family said in a statement. “Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.” They asked for privacy as they mourn the loss.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to her Hollywood Hills home Monday evening, where she was pronounced dead. A law enforcement source said she died by apparent suicide.
Katherine Short earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and gender studies from NYU in 2006 and a master’s degree in social work from USC in 2010. She later ran a private practice and worked part-time at Amae Health, a psychiatry-led outpatient clinic. She was also involved with Bring Change 2 Mind, an organization focused on ending the stigma surrounding mental illness.
She was the eldest of three children adopted by Martin Short and his late wife, Nancy Dolman, who died of ovarian cancer in 2010. The couple married in 1980 after meeting during a Toronto production of “Godspell.”
In his 2014 memoir, I Must Say: My Life as a Humble Comedy Legend, Martin Short reflected on grief and resilience following his wife’s death, dedicating the book to his children.
Katherine Short’s death comes during a difficult period for the family and their close circle. Martin Short recently paid tribute to longtime friend and collaborator Catherine O’Hara, who died earlier this year.
If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available through local mental health services and suicide prevention hotlines.
