The Houston Texans have made a decisive move to reshape their offense, acquiring running back David Montgomery from the Detroit Lions in exchange for offensive lineman Juice Scruggs and two draft picks.
A Clear Upgrade in Houston’s Backfield
Houston entered the offseason determined to fix a rushing attack that ranked 22nd in the league at 108 yards per game in 2025. Rookie Woody Marks led the team with just 703 rushing yards, while veteran Nick Chubb is set to hit free agency. Meanwhile, Joe Mixon missed the entire 2025 season with a foot injury and is widely expected to be released.
Montgomery immediately steps in as Houston’s projected No. 1 running back for 2026. Since entering the league in 2019, he has been one of the NFL’s most productive backs, surpassing 6,000 rushing yards and 50 rushing touchdowns — a milestone reached by only a handful of players during that span, including Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs, Jonathan Taylor, and Christian McCaffrey.
In three seasons with Detroit, Montgomery rushed for 2,506 yards and 33 touchdowns after signing with the Lions in 2023 following four years with the Chicago Bears.
Why Detroit Moved On
While Montgomery remained productive, his role diminished significantly in 2025 as he shared the backfield with three-time Pro Bowler Jahmyr Gibbs. Nicknamed “Knuckles” to Gibbs’ “Sonic” because of their contrasting styles, the duo was one of the league’s most dynamic pairings.
However, Montgomery averaged just 9.3 carries and 10.7 touches per game last season — both career lows — despite playing all 17 games. His snap share dipped to 41% overall and just 33% over the final eight weeks. He did not record more than 10 carries in any of Detroit’s last eight games.
Though he engaged in what sources described as “healthy dialogue” with Lions general manager Brad Holmes about his future, the reduced role ultimately made a fresh start logical for both sides.
Detroit’s Bigger Plan
For Detroit, the trade signals a renewed focus on rebuilding the offensive line. The Lions struggled up front in 2025, ranking 20th in run block win rate and 30th in pass block win rate. Scruggs adds interior depth, and the additional draft capital provides flexibility as the franchise looks to retool.
The Lions also released veteran lineman Graham Glasgow to create cap space, underscoring their commitment to reshaping the trenches after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2022.
What This Means Moving Forward
For Houston, this is a win-now move. Montgomery brings durability, physicality, and proven red-zone production to an offense that lacked consistency on the ground. At 29 in June and entering the first year of a two-year extension, he offers both short-term stability and leadership for a team aiming to rebound in 2026.
For Detroit, the deal clears the runway for Gibbs to fully command the backfield while strengthening other roster areas.
Ultimately, this trade reflects two teams heading in different but purposeful directions — Houston doubling down on offensive balance, and Detroit reinforcing its foundation up front.
