Venezuela Stuns Japan to Reach WBC Semifinals and Olympic Qualifier

The World Baseball Classic delivered another dramatic moment as the Venezuela national baseball team rallied to defeat the Japan national baseball team 8–5 in the quarterfinals at LoanDepot Park. The victory not only sent Venezuela into the semifinals for the first time in tournament history but also secured the nation a place in the baseball competition at the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Japan entered the matchup as the defending WBC champion and had been dominant throughout the tournament, going undefeated in pool play. However, Venezuela responded with a powerful offensive performance and a resilient bullpen effort to overturn a midgame deficit.

The scoring began quickly when Ronald Acuña Jr. launched a leadoff home run in the first inning. Japan answered immediately as Shohei Ohtani tied the game with a home run of his own. Later in the game, Japan appeared to take control after Shota Morishita delivered a three-run homer that helped build a 5–2 lead.

Venezuela refused to back down. The comeback began when Maikel Garcia hit a two-run homer to narrow the gap. The defining moment came in the sixth inning when Wilyer Abreu crushed a three-run homer to give Venezuela the lead, igniting a passionate crowd largely supporting the Venezuelan side.

From there, Venezuela’s bullpen took over the game. Six relief pitchers combined for more than six scoreless innings, shutting down Japan’s powerful lineup. Ohtani had another chance late in the ninth inning, but his flyout ended Japan’s hopes of a comeback.

Manager Omar López credited preparation and teamwork for the historic victory. The team had spent days studying Japan’s lineup and used multiple relievers strategically to neutralize one of the tournament’s most dangerous offenses.

The win places Venezuela among the final four teams in the tournament and sets up a semifinal clash with the surprising Italy national baseball team. A victory there would send Venezuela to the championship game against the winner of the matchup between the United States national baseball team and the Dominican Republic national baseball team.

Beyond the tournament stakes, the result marked a milestone for Venezuelan baseball. By reaching the semifinals, the team officially qualified for the baseball tournament at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, a historic first for the nation.

For a country known for producing legendary baseball talent, the win reinforced its place among the sport’s global powers. With momentum on their side and a passionate fan base behind them, Venezuela now looks ahead to the semifinals with hopes of making even more history.
