A tragic late-night collision at LaGuardia Airport has left two pilots dead and several others injured, prompting a full-scale investigation into how a passenger plane and an emergency vehicle ended up on the same runway at the same time.
The incident occurred shortly after 11:30 p.m. when an Air Canada Express flight, operated by Jazz Aviation, was completing its landing. As the aircraft approached the end of its rollout, it collided with a Port Authority firetruck that had been dispatched to respond to a separate situation on the runway.
The impact proved fatal for both the pilot and co-pilot. Meanwhile, two Port Authority police officers inside the emergency vehicle sustained serious injuries, including broken bones, though they are expected to recover.
Onboard the aircraft were 72 passengers and four crew members. More than a dozen individuals suffered injuries of varying severity, with several transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. While no passenger fatalities were reported, the scale of the injuries highlights how close the situation came to an even greater disaster.
Initial reports indicate the plane was traveling at approximately 30 mph at the time of the collision—significantly faster than typical taxiing speeds. This detail has become a key focus for investigators trying to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Authorities, including the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board, have launched investigations. Early findings have not yet determined the cause, leaving open questions about communication, runway coordination, and operational protocols.
Weather conditions may also come under scrutiny. The collision followed a night of heavy rain across New York City, with reduced visibility and wet runway conditions reported at the time. Although it is unclear whether weather directly contributed to the crash, such factors can complicate both pilot navigation and ground vehicle operations.
In the aftermath, airport operations were severely disrupted. A full ground stop was issued, with closures, cancellations, and major traffic delays affecting travelers and surrounding roadways.
