Acclaimed actress Valerie Perrine, best known for her roles in Superman and Lenny, has died at the age of 82 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Perrine passed away at her home in Beverly Hills, with the news confirmed by her longtime companion, who described her as a resilient and inspiring figure who faced her illness with remarkable courage.
Born in Galveston in 1943, Perrine grew up in a military family, spending parts of her childhood abroad before eventually pursuing a career in entertainment. She began as a Las Vegas showgirl before transitioning into acting—a move that would soon propel her into Hollywood recognition.
Her breakout role came in Lenny, where she starred opposite Dustin Hoffman. Her portrayal of Honey, the troubled wife of comedian Lenny Bruce, earned her widespread acclaim, including the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination.
Perrine later gained global recognition for playing Eve Teschmacher, the loyal yet conflicted assistant to Lex Luthor, portrayed by Gene Hackman, in the original Superman films starring Christopher Reeve. Her character became a fan favorite, remembered for ultimately helping save Superman.
Throughout her career, Perrine balanced both drama and comedy, appearing alongside major stars such as Robert Redford in The Electric Horseman and Jeff Bridges in The Last American Hero.
