Shane Gillis and Chelsea Handler Spar at Netflix Roast

Comedians Shane Gillis and Chelsea Handler became one of the biggest talking points of Netflix Is A Joke Festival 2026 after a tense exchange during Netflix’s Roast of Kevin Hart sparked widespread reactions online.

The incident took place during the closing show of the festival, where Gillis served as host and introduced Handler with a series of controversial remarks touching on Israel, abortion, and Handler’s previously discussed connection to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

During his introduction, Gillis referred to Handler as a “Zionist” before making several provocative jokes related to abortion and Epstein. One of the sharpest moments came when he referenced Handler’s attendance at a 2010 dinner hosted by Epstein, a topic she has spoken about publicly in past interviews.

Handler had previously addressed the dinner during a 2025 podcast appearance with Rob Lowe, describing the gathering as “weird” and stating that she was unaware of Epstein’s background at the time. She recalled that the dinner included several high-profile figures, including Woody Allen and Prince Andrew.

When Handler later took the stage, she responded directly to Gillis’s remarks, immediately addressing his references to Judaism and Zionism.

“Judaism and Zionism are two different things,” Handler told the audience before pivoting to a jab about Gillis’s controversial departure from Saturday Night Live in 2019.

Gillis was removed from the cast of the show shortly after being announced as a new cast member following the resurfacing of podcast clips in which he used anti-Asian slurs. Despite the controversy, he later returned to host the show multiple times, rebuilding his profile as one of stand-up comedy’s most commercially successful acts.

The exchange between Gillis and Handler quickly spread across social media, with clips from the roast generating heated debate over the boundaries of comedy roasts and the role of politically charged material in mainstream entertainment.

Supporters of the comedians argued that roast events are specifically designed around aggressive humor and personal attacks, while critics questioned whether some of the remarks crossed the line into unnecessarily offensive territory. Discussions online focused particularly on the references to Israel, abortion, and Epstein, all of which remain highly sensitive subjects in public discourse.

The Roast of Kevin Hart served as the closing event for Netflix’s annual comedy festival, which featured performances from some of the biggest names in stand-up comedy. Over the past several years, Netflix roasts have increasingly relied on controversial humor and celebrity feuds to drive viral attention online, often generating as much conversation after the event as during the performances themselves.

Neither Gillis nor Handler appeared to further escalate the exchange after the show, though clips from the roast continued circulating widely across platforms throughout Monday.

The moment added another headline-grabbing chapter to Gillis’s career, which has frequently been shaped by controversy alongside his rapid rise in popularity. For Handler, the exchange reinforced her long-standing reputation for directly confronting personal and political criticism during live performances.

As reactions continue online, the roast once again highlighted the growing tension in modern comedy between shock humor, celebrity culture, and evolving audience expectations around sensitive topics.
