Kiran Bedi, former IPS officer and one of Anna Hazare’s Lieutenants, blamed India’s opposition parties for failing to take up the issue of corruption and pointed out politics is not the preserve of those who seek to monopolize it.
She said that people like herself and Anna Hazare were forced to take up the issue because the politicians, especially in the opposition, failed to reflect the people’s sentiments on such issues.
She was responding to statements by Digvijay Singh and Manu Singhvi, Congress leaders, that someone teaching Yoga should not enter politics.
“We didn’t usurp this space.. They left it for us. We went to them with requests that please take up this issue. When we saw nothing was happening, Anna had to take it up himself,” he pointed out at inaugural address at the fast of Anna Hazare today.
Civil Society also pointed out that Politics is not the inheritance of a few people that others cannot enter it. “If that is so, then let the advocates go back to arguing in Courts. Why are they in politics,” they asked, referring to advocates like Kapil Sibal, P Chidambaram etc. in the central cabinet.
