As of census 2011, there were about 18,000 villages without power in the country.

Out of these, about 10,000 have already been electrified. In his speech on Independence day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the remaining 7,876 villages will be electrified May 2018. The Power Ministry has also hastened its execution of the project.
