Youtube movies crosses 3,000 films, Indian studios give it the thumbs up

Youtube Movies, Google’s free, full-length movie streaming service has crossed 3,000 titles, the web giant said.

Unlike the initial stages, the movie collection now includes new movies as well, but these will be in the ‘paid’ section.

The relatively new movies that can be watched after paying the rental include The King’s Speech, The Green Hornet and Despicable Me.

Youtube movies is one of the low-key services started by Google. Initially targeted at figuring out whether users will bother to watch a two-hour long flick on their computer, the service now seems to be catching momentum.

Unlike other Google services, movies are rarely the subject of aggressive promotion by Google. Most web-service companies prefer not to serve full length movies as it eats up large amounts of bandwidth and is tough to monetize.

Interestingly, Indian studios and rights holders have been one of the most enthusiastic adopters of the new service — with a large number of 90s and 2000s titles available on the service from Indian languages like Hindi, Telugu and Tamil.

Google said that increasingly, movies on offer also have free behind-the-scenes videos, cast interviews, parodies, clips and remixes.
