Subramanian Swamy, the BJP leader known for speaking his mind, today said the 2G scam case was “sabotaged” by law officials who were in charge of the case and investigation.

Swamy pointed out that the judge in his order noted that there was a lot of enthusiasm in the beginning, but it disappeared later, and called the judgment was a condemnation of the way the case has been handled by the government.

He pointed out that the Supreme Court had noted that there was apparent criminality in the case and that is why the special court was set up.

“This has happened because it was sabotaged by law officers,” he said, adding that the current judgment was ‘bad’ and will definitely be set aside on appeal.

Swamy also gave examples of officers, whom he called honest and upright, who are getting transferred for conducting fair investigation.

Swamy urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be aware of attempts to sabotage various investigations. He said a similar attempt was being made to sabotage the investigation into allegations against P Chidambaram.

He said the verdict need not be a setback to the government.

“It is what I would call an aberration because the law officers were not serious about fighting corruption. I would request the PM to take a lesson from this,” Swamy said in unusually blunt comments.

He also warned that the government must get its act together as far as unearthing and prosecuting corruption is concerned, or it will face tough questions from the electorate in 2019.

“If we don’t change our way of working, then this could be a set back for us in 2019. We cannot continue to work with the same attitude and same group of people (to fight corruption) going forward,” Swamy said.

“PM must take up fighting corruption on a war footing and put aside from any investigation people who are not enthusiastic about fighting corruption. There are people in my party who are not very enthusiastic about fighting corruption,” he added.

Swamy was also critical that the government had hired Mukul Rohatgi, who was the counsel for some of the accused in the 2G scam case, as the top law officer in the country.
