IT major Wipro Limited has launched a Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) centre in Kochi, its third, after Mountain View and Bangalore.

Industrial Internet of Things refers to the concept of extending internet connectivity beyond conventional computing platforms such as personal computers and mobile phones into various non-internet enabled physical devices.

Embedded with electronics, internet connectivity and other forms of hardware such as sensors, these devices can communicate and interact with others over the internet. They can also be remotely monitored and controlled.

IoT will lead to greater automation and the proliferation of ‘smart devices’ such as smart light bulbs, smart vehicles and even smart toilet seats.

It is also one of the hottest areas for IT services companies due to the high levels of investments being made into the specialization by auto makers, electronic manufacturers and practically every other industrial player.

Wipro said the new centre is a mark of Wipro’s commitment to extending internet connectivity across customers in industrial manufacturing, automotives, healthcare and pharmaceutical and consumer products and goods.

“IoT presents a huge opportunity for industries in a hyper-connected world and we are confident that our end-to-end services and offerings will help our clients leverage loT as part of their digital transformation goals”, Wipro said in its statement.

Wipro also hosted a two-day hackathon on Industrial IoT from March 12-13 at its Kochi development centre, which saw active participation from leading engineering colleges in Kerala.

Wipro said it will extend pre-placement offers to the winning participants in the
final year of their engineering degree course while those in the penultimate year of their degree program will receive internship opportunities.

The new hires will join Wipro’s lloT research and development team in Kochi.

Headquartered in Bengaluru, Wipro is one of the leading providers of IT, consulting and business services in India.
