Meizu M2 priced at Rs 6,999 in India, takes on Lenovo A6000 Plus, Yu Yunique, Redmi Prime

Meizu, the latest entrant to the Indian market from China, has launched its third and entry-level model, the Meizu M2, at a price of Rs 6,999 in India.

The M2 will take on the Yu Yunique (priced Rs 4,999), Yu Yuphoria (Rs 6,499) and Lenovo A6000 Plus (Price Rs 7,499 – but festival discounts expected soon) and till end of today, also with the full-HD Phicomm Passion 660 which is available at Rs 6,999 today.

In terms of value for money, the Passion 660 easily wins the race as it is under a special discount scheme. However, other than that, the Meizu M2 can be placed between the Yu Yuphoria and the A6000 Plus.

The Yuphoria, A6000 Plus and M2 have almost the exact same specifications: 5-inch 720p displays, entry-level 4G chipsets, 16 GB of storage memory and 2 GB of RAM.

However, the Meizu M2 scores over the other two in terms of camera. It has a 13 MP  rear shooter complemented by a 5 MP front shooter.

The Meizu model also scores above the others by offering a 2.5 Ah battery instead of the 2.23 and 2.3 Ah units on the other two.

On the downside, you have to choose between dual-SIM or MicroSD card — a problem with the mid-range M2 Note as well and it looks like there is no FM radio in the model either, which will be a disappointment for commuters in Mumbai.

In terms of LTE band support, it is not clear whether all three bands in India — Band 3, 40 and 20 — are supported on this model. The other two phones seem to support them.

The phone will also compete with Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime, which is currently available for Rs 6,999. However, the Redmi model has a 4.7 inch display instead of 5 inches and comes with Android 4.4 and a 2.2 Ah battery. Most of the other specs are similar.

However, going beyond mere specs, a buyer must keep in mind overall user experience. In this space, Yu Yuphoria lags behind, and the phone has got mixed reviews. The Redmi model and the A6000 Plus have had better user feedback.

The Meizu M2 is also unlikely to disappoint in this department. Meizu has a reputation for coming out with phones that have good build quality, though it’s a young brand in India.

M2 is being sold on Snapdeal and registrations for the sale will close on 11 Oct (Sunday) at 4 pm.
